Home Welcome from DeWitt County Treasurer Christy Long

Welcome to the DeWitt County Treasurer's web site. I hope the taxpayers of DeWitt County will find these innovative property tax search options, convenient and easy to use.

The County Treasurer serves as both Treasurer and Collector. The Treasurer is responsible for depositing, investing and disbursing all funds for DeWitt County. The Collector is responsible for billing, collecting, investing and distributing property taxes.

It is the duty of the County Treasurer to deposit, invest and distribute monies on behalf of the County.  This covers the receipt of all revenues for the County, including the recording, deposit of such funds, investment, and reconciliation of such revenues.  The County Treasurer maintains records of all revenue deposited annually.

County Treasurers are cash managers not investors. Our investment objectives are Safety, Liquidity and Yield in that order. These objectives are spelled out in an Investment Policy which is required by Illinois law for all custodians of public funds.

Each month the Treasurer reports to the County Board the amount of money invested in banks. Investment objectives for the Treasurer are safety of principal, liquidity, and maximum rate of return.

The County Collector mails out tax bills per year. Upon receipt of the tax monies, the County Collector distributes these funds to the different taxing districts.

Tax collection funds are kept in interest bearing accounts. The interest earned on the accounts is disbursed according to the various taxing districts proportional to the amount of tax collected for them.

The County Collector holds a tax sale at the end of every tax year to collect the amount of tax on every parcel the remains unpaid.

The Treasurer assists senior citizens in filing for Real Estate Tax Deferral. The Treasurer reviews and grants the tax deferral to those who meet the requirements. Information pertaining to approved deferral applicants is then reported to the Department of Revenue.

The Treasurer maintains tax records from the County's incorporation year and makes them available to the public.

The Treasurer also receives and records inheritance tax.

The Treasurer may also serve as the designated Treasurer for other governmental entities:
* Drainage District(s) Treasurer.

In some jurisdictions, the County Collector may also have responsibility for specific Animal Control activities (specifically dog licenses).
